Our Top 5 Outdoor Activities for Self-Care

Self-care can be defined in so many different ways quietly reading your favorite book, meditating, watching Netflix, getting a massage, or spending meaningful time alone or with the ones you love. No matter what self-care looks like to you, the most important thing is that you find what works and you practice regularly. 

For us, getting outside regularly is a key part of our self-care routine. Here are five things we do outside to practice self-care. (Spoiler: it’s not complicated.)

  1. Walk the pups. Sometimes we talk to friends, wave at neighbors, or simply enjoy the breeze and our happy pups.
  2. Visit our local “happy place” and take a stroll. For us, the beach is an A+ happy place. By visiting regularly, we’re able to see the changing sand, migration of birds, and the beauty of each season. 
  3. Take a hike. We love hiking, and whether it’s a local state park or a distant land, working our muscles, taking in the fresh air, listening to the rustle of fall leaves under foot or smelling the fresh blooms of spring, a walk in the forest always replenishes our emotional reserves.
  4. Have an old fashioned picnic. We love to pack a lunch <or snag our favorite take out>, grab a blanket and head to the park. It’s a great way to relax, and we think food tastes just a little better paired with sunshine.
  5. Play a game. We’re never too old to play a good ol’ lawn game. It’s a great way to relax. So, if it’s croquet, bocci ball, frisbee, or badminton that strike our fancy, we love the feeling of trading our adult worries for some youthful fun. 

Take away: self-care looks different for everyone + self-care does not have to be expensive or elaborate.
