We founded and launched b.minton in early 2020 with a goal of helping people find more balance and joy in their lives. Whether it was stress at home or burnout at work, we wanted to bring tools, ideas, and advice to help people <women, in particular> avoid the exhaustion that comes with being overworked and underappreciated. We started as a Business-to-Business (B2B) company, working with human resource (HR) managers to bring self-care toolkits with lasting benefits to their employees as a signal of appreciation and a celebration of hard work.
But, like so many people, the pandemic had another thing in store for us. Businesses transitioned to focusing solely on keeping rather than rewarding their employees. This worldwide pivot also forced us to reevaluate our business model and focus on what really matters — helping women find lasting balance and joy in this crazy world. We realized that we didn’t need to go through HR department to do that.
We won’t go through all the gory details of our sleepless nights over essentially starting two businesses in a year, but we emerged with a clear vision, an even stronger desire to help women, and a direction that we knew in our hearts was finally what had been searching for — a personal connection with women through direct sales of curated self-care gift boxes with lasting benefit.
But how do you start over? All of our business relationships were in the local business communities and with companies not people. Our sales model was contract-based, not e-commerce, and we used the word toolkit, not “gift box!”
We reconnected with old friends and we made new friends in our hometown of Charleston and all over the country. We listened to their concerns, their struggles and what they love and cherish. We reached out to fellow female entrepreneurs and soaked up every bit of advice we could, and we called on the kindness and compassion of friends to help us during our start-up. And with hard work we created a whole new self-care business that we launched with our signature collection at the end of October 2020.
Sometimes, you have to be prepared that a “pivot” may mean a whole new business strategy. But through it all, we remained true to our core values and vision.
It hasn’t been easy, but we’re so excited to continue to grow and support women, and we’re so thankful that we’re able to do that right here in Charleston, SC, a city that has given us so many opportunities, happy memories, and some of the best views we could ever ask for.
