Hooray for summer BBQs, s’mores on the campfire, and farmers markets. Summer is the perfect time to start practicing mindful eating. It begins with knowing where your food comes from and the process continues through to the last, delicious bite. 

A great way to introduce mindful eating into your life is to prepare something fresh and delicious that brings you joy. Now that summer is upon is, pick up some beautiful, local produce. Try a new recipe or keep it simple and enjoy a bowl of freshly picked berries. 

Let’s skip to the best part: the eating! For the purpose of this exercise, let’s imagine we are enjoying some ripe strawberries.

HOW-TO: 

  1. Turn off distractions. No TV, phone, etc.
  2. Find a quiet spot that makes you happy. (Pro tip: sitting by a window or out in nature is always a good idea.)
  3. Take a minute to look at the strawberries. Notice their hues of red. The shape of the seeds that dot the fruit. The greens that connected them to the earth.
  4. Pick up a strawberry and take a moment to feel it and notice how it sits in your hand.
  5. Smell it. Think about what the smell evokes for you.
  6. Now, take a bite. Experience the burst of juice that emerges when you bite into a strawberry. Let the fresh fruit sit in your mouth for just a moment. Savor it. Explore it.
  7. Now swallow the fruit and enjoy the flavors that linger on your tongue.
  8. Slowly, thoughtfully, follow these steps as you truly EXPERIENCE YOUR FOOD.

That’s it. It’s not more complicated than that. The point is to appreciate the full sensory experience of your food. We are so busy and, especially if you are a parent, you likely shovel in a handful of whatever you can find or what’s left on your kid’s plate.  

Of course, we don’t all have the luxury of following these steps for every meal…so try it once a week or perhaps incorporate it into your morning coffee routine. When you slowly and thoughtfully enjoy your food, you will reap the benefits far beyond that one meal.
