A Feel-Good (and Family-Friendly) List of Movies For Self-Care

Self-care can mean so many different things -- from mindfulness to sleep, and everything in between. Sometimes self-care simply means putting on your favorite sweatpants, grabbing some snacks, and flopping on the couch for a good ol’ movie night. To save you from the frustration of 30 minutes of scrolling through Netflix to find a gem, we’ve pulled together some classic, feel-good go-tos. We decided to stick to family-friendly flicks for this list but we’ll be sure to pull together our dark n’ quirky list for another blog.

  1. Princess Bride (1987). Robin Wright is flawless in this fairytale-style movie that’s super quotable. “Inconceivable!” Did you know that Rotten Tomatoes just crowned this the ultimate rom-com?
  2. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991). Written by a woman and featuring an all-star female cast, this is a story that celebrates female friendships and transformation. Enjoy a young Chris O’Donnell.
  3. A League of Their Own (1992). Based on a true story, this follows the struggles and achievements of women who played professional women's baseball in WWII America. It’s full of inspiration and, hello, Madonna crushes it.
  4. Forrest Gump (1994). This Oscar-winning movie has an incredible cast, memorable lines, and an outstanding soundtrack.
  5. Practical Magic (1995). What is better than a flawless performance from Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman? A movie about magic, romance, and sassy women. Yes, please.
  6. Erin Brockovich (2000). To all the women who are trying to change the world...this is a must see.
  7. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). This is such a funny, clever movie that celebrates family and tradition in a way that you haven’t seen before.
  8. The Notebook (2004). We don’t usually go for the classic romance movies but this one was filmed in Charleston, so it’s basically required viewing. Bonus, Ryan Gosling does not disappoint.
  9. Akeelah and the Bee (2006). Who would have thought a fictional story about a spelling bee could be so interesting? This is an inspirational new classic.
  10. The Pursuit of Happiness (2006). Based on a true story, what a powerful story of what we are capable of as people. This is a sweet, thoughtful, and inspirational story.
  11. Slum Dog Millionaire (2008). Set in India, this movie is a story of perseverance. It includes impossible odds and plot twists, topped with a little romance.
  12. Bridesmaids (2011). If this movie escaped your radar then stop reading this blog and watch this movie immediately. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy for the win.
  13. Frozen (2013). You know it’s been a minute since you’ve watched Frozen so perhaps it’s time to belt out “Let it Go” and celebrate the deep love between sisters.
  14. Wild (2014). This charming movie follows a woman who turns her life around by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. She’s not a hiker, her pack is too heavy, she has so many things working against her, but <spoiler> she ends up finding herself. <cue the music>
  15. Hidden Figures (2016). Get ready for all the feels. This movie is loosely based on the unsung story of three black female mathematicians in NASA. Honestly, we cannot get enough of women crushing it despite all the odds!

These are mostly family-friendly so if you’re littles want to crash on the couch with you, let them. But they have to bring their own snacks. Hands off mama’s popcorn.
